Tattoo care

Introduction

Taking care of your tattoo is just as important as the work done on your skin. The way it heals will determine the intensity of the colors, the contrast, and the definition of the details.

There are two aftercare methods once you get tattooed:

  • Option 1: Without patch (simple coverage) → Traditional method, allows the skin to breathe from the start.
  • Option 2: With Second Skin patch → Modern method, covers the tattoo with a protective film that supports the initial healing process.

Both are safe and effective. The choice will depend on your artist’s recommendation, the size of your tattoo, and your personal preference.

FAQs for First-Timers

Which one is better?

Both work well. Second Skin provides more comfort and protection in the first few days. The no-patch method allows for a more natural, breathable healing process.

What cream should I use?

A neutral, fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizing cream. Avoid petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointments.

When should I be concerned?

If you notice excessive redness, severe pain, foul-smelling discharge, or fever, contact your tattoo artist and consult a doctor.

Can I work out or go swimming?

During the first week, avoid direct sunlight, swimming pools, saunas, the ocean, and intense workouts.

How long does it take to heal?

The initial healing process takes 2–3 weeks, but the skin fully recovers within 4–6 weeks.

Option 1: Without Patch (Simple Coverage)

Aftercare following your tattoo session:

  • Remove the bandage applied at the end of the session after 3 hours, or once you arrive home.
  • Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap, using only clean hands.
  • Gently pat dry with disposable paper towels, never with a cloth towel.
  • For the first 3 days, do not apply cream; let the skin heal naturally.
  • Starting on the fourth day, apply a thin layer of moisturizing cream 2–3 times a day.
  • Avoid sun exposure, swimming pools, saunas, and intense workouts for at least the first week.

Option 2: With Second Skin Patch

Aftercare following your tattoo session:

  • Keep the patch on for 4–5 days, as recommended by your tattoo artist.
  • It’s normal to see some moisture or a buildup of ink/plasma, especially with larger tattoos.
  • Once you remove the patch, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap, using only your hands.
  • Gently pat dry with disposable paper towels, never with a cloth towel.
  • From that moment on, start applying a thin layer of moisturizing cream several times a day.
  • Avoid sun exposure, swimming pools, saunas, and intense workouts while the tattoo is healing.

Post-Healing Recommendation

Once your tattoo is fully healed (around 4 to 6 weeks):

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (minimum SPF 30, ideally SPF 50) whenever your tattoo is exposed to the sun.
  • Sun exposure is the main cause of tattoo fading.
  • Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours if you’re outdoors.
  • Keep your skin regularly moisturized with a neutral cream.
  • Avoid strong exfoliants, acids, or abrasive products on the tattoo.
